School nursing

This is my fifth year as a school nurse and I spent 16 years in the ER. I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love school nursing. I just love it so much. I get choked up just talking about it.

Even though it’s very much the same as an ER it’s very much different. You never know what’s going to come through the door, but getting to know these kids – like they’re your own kids – is so different than working in the hospital. I get to know them, their families, their parents, their siblings and their friends. I get to know what sports teams they’re on and what kind of food they like to eat. It’s something that I wasn’t prepared for – to have this connection with the kids, and that’s what I love most about school nursing.

It’s more than just nursing skills – those I’ve had for a long time. It’s the other stuff that goes along with it – the coaching, the mentoring, being their biggest fan and their friend and their fashion consultant and their shoe cobbler. Just being somebody who can acknowledge that they don’t feel good that day. Sometimes that’s all they need to be able to turn back around and face the day again. Because sometimes they don’t have their mom or dad here right now, so I consider the school nurse as an extension of mom and dad. I’ve found that this is the most rewarding part of my nursing career and I just plan to be here until I retire.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love the beach. School nursing – you can’t beat that schedule with summers off, and I’m learning how to paddle board. I like watching sunrises and sunsets. They’re my favorite thing on earth. They’re constantly changing. They’re beautiful. I like that they just represent so much – the beginning, the end. I don’t know why I like them. I just do. I can’t look away.

Gymnastics just gives me a lot of joy

Gymnastics just gives me a lot of joy. When I do it I forget about a lot of other things that I was worrying about. I was doing ballet and rhythmic gymnastics. My rhythmic gymnastics coach went somewhere else, so I went to gym. They moved me from Level 3 to Level 4, Level 7, Level 8 and now Level 9 this year. The highest level is 10 or elite. My coaches are training me probably for [USA Gymnastics] HOPES this year in Level 9. It will be my first year doing it. HOPES is a different kind of testing for TOPS, and it’s for top gymnasts in the country.

I leave at school at 3 p.m. every day now so I can go to ‘doubles’ and that’s when you have extra gym so you can get better. I practice about five hours each day. On Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays, I think, I do five hours. Wednesdays I do two hours. Thursdays I do four hours and Saturdays I do four hours. I get a break on Sundays.

My favorite event is uneven bars. I feel like that’s the least scary to me but everyone else thinks it’s the scariest for them. It’s my favorite event. I love it so much.

I’ve tried a lot of other sports – like swimming, ballet; I’ve done fencing because my brothers do it. I’ve also tried martial arts, but my favorite one was gymnastics. I want to return to rhythmic one day, but I like gym the best.

My goal is to go to the Olympics in 2024. It’s going to be in Paris. I’ve always wanted to go to Paris.

People helped me

I’m the cafeteria monitor at Strawbridge Elementary – and SOL tutor, substitute teacher. I love it because it helps me not only give back but also to work my way up in Virginia Beach Schools to a full-time TA position.

Why do you like working in schools and with students?

Because I remember when I was a student way back when, and what I learned in school I want to help give back. People helped me.

We have a balloon blowing contest in lunch. The students will come and I will get maybe one or two students. They will do 30 seconds. They have to blow it up the biggest.  The winner…I will give them Shark Bucks. It hasn’t happened yet.

No one has beat you yet?

Not even Mrs. Sargeant.

We also have hula hoop and cup stacking. If they let the hula hoop drop to the ground, they’ve lost.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Singing at church. Spending time with my wife. Music. Talking to people.

She’s not just our teacher

If we didn’t have teachers, we wouldn’t have jobs. We really wouldn’t have anything if teachers weren’t teachers. No one would be able to do what they always dreamed of. All your life you’re working up to be someone you want to be and teachers help you with that all through your life.

I actually have a surprise for my teacher, Ms. Cohen, for Teacher Appreciation Week. She is really cheerful and giddy and always puts everyone in a good mood. She is strict when she needs to be, but she’s a really good teacher and she helps everyone on their pathway. We have a really good connection with her, so we all know about her and she knows about us. She can talk to each one of us and know exactly what we’re talking about – like, something that we talked about three weeks ago; she’s just that kind of a teacher. She’s not just our teacher but she’s like a mom or a friend, and she helps us.

I collect Transformers

I collect Transformers, which is kind of nerdy. I counted them the other day, I think I have over 70, which is a lot. I really enjoy them. I played with them as a kid and I just decided to start collecting them.

My dad grew up with the original show, and he took me to see the first movie when I was, like, 2. I grew up watching the show that was along with that and watching the movies. So I’ve kind of grown up with it.

I guess Soundwave is my favorite. He’s got like a monotone voice and a mono eye.

What are you thinking about for a career?

Either being a lawyer somewhere in the law field because I got into First Colonial High School for the Legal Studies Academy. I want to see what I want to go to in the law field.

And your name is Justice. Any connection?

Not really. My dad picked a bunch of really dumb names and that was the least bad. Others were Hawk, Bishop…a couple more. My mom didn’t like any of them. She thought Justice was the least bad.

What do you think of it?

I like my name. I think it’s different.

#WeAreVBSchools

I want to be tons of things

What I like about school is math, but it’s hard – reading and writing, our teachers and our principal, PE, lunch…I like everything!

I brought in cookies for the class yesterday and I really don’t know why. The night before, I was bored so I said, “Mom, I’m bringing in cookies for the class.” I rolled the dough into a ball and put one pan in the oven and my mom put in the other pan. It took like 30 minutes.

Have you thought about what you’d like to be when you’re older?

I want to be tons of things. I want to be a coach for cheerleading and for gymnastics. And I want to make clothes for dogs and make clothes for people. Dogs are my favorite animal.

And I love singing. It just gives me the inspiration to make me happy for some reason. My mom took me to this place called Music Makers. I do singing and piano. I’m working on this song and it’s a cup song from “Pitch Perfect.” I have to do piano with it. I decided to do it by myself. And my music teacher looks just like my teacher here, Ms. Stava. She really does.

Science inspires me

Science inspires me because my uncle is a scientist. You get to guess about what you think is going to happen. It’s a hypotheses.

Do you want to be a scientist when you grow up?

No. I want to be an engineer because I like to make stuff to see what happens and see how things work. I just want to make things happen. I like to figure out what the answer is to stuff. When you’re an engineer, you get to see the scientists and you get to make the scientists’ ideas.

I stop and smell the flowers

I’ve been with Arrowhead for almost eight years now. I also do senior care.

Here with the kids, that’s my upbeat – you’re in mommy mode. And then the second half of my day, I’m with my seniors and that mellows me out. I stop and smell the flowers, enjoy life, take it in. The stories are amazing. I’ve been doing that about eight years as well. It really makes you appreciate life. I wouldn’t trade that in for the world.

Right now I have one client. She will be 94. She is like my best friend. I have learned so much from her. They have so much spirit, and it kind of makes me when I feel like I’m ready to step to the negative I say, “No – life is good.” It’s a constant reminder for me.

#WeAreVBSchools #WeAreWednesdays

I collect antiques

I collect antiques. I had a pretty massive Coca-Cola collection at one time – memorabilia, the old stuff. It’s advertising in general. I used to find it at flea markets, yard sales, antique shows, E-bay.

What got you interested in collecting?

Like all kids, playing in the woods we’d come across these old bottle dumps of people throwing stuff away. We were digging around and I found a Coke bottle and I stuck it in the garage and I found it years later. I always thought it was interesting because the bottle read: “Bottle patented Dec. 25, 1923.” I thought, that’s Christmas; why would it be Christmas on this Coke bottle? So I found a book on Coca-Cola memorabilia and it said that in the 1920s they issued patents like on the Tuesday of each week. That bottle, when they re-patented it, it happened to fall on Dec. 25. So even though they weren’t open that day that’s what was probably put on every bottle that Coke manufactured until probably 1937.

So you have scores and scores of Coke memorabilia?

Yes. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of it but I still have a garage that’s full of it. I still collect antique scales – sort of, making it look like a country store. One thing leads to another, but part of my retirement plan is to start getting rid of it because it’s massive and you don’t know – you have two bottle openers and one is worth $3 and another could be $300. The old typewriters and adding machines, I got into that when I started doing the country store thing. So I would pick them up at antique malls. I used to get them at flea markets for $10 but now they are coming back up in prices. So you find stuff around. Once you collect, you can’t stop.

The Greatest Show

When I was at the audition for the school’s talent show, it was kind of exciting and kind of creepy because I hadn’t done it yet and I was afraid I would forget the words and get stage fright. I have done other things for the school, like Reflections, but I really wasn’t performing in front of other people like what I would be doing in a talent show.

What was the name of your act?

The Greatest Show. I was the circus king in act No. 1. I was supposed to sing a song. The first song of the actual movie – “The Greatest Showman.” It was really fun.

What would you tell other people who get nervous?

I would tell them don’t be afraid. If you do your best, it will all turn out. And, if you do your best, you will always be a winner.

#WeAreVBSchools

What really inspires me

What really inspires me are athletic people, like Olympians. I really love sports and right now I’m doing track. I love talking to my teammates because we all help each other reach our goals.

I run the 300-meter hurdles, the 110-meter hurdles, the 4×4, and the 200; and I do the high jump, triple jump and long-jump. I have the school’s record for indoor season for high jump at 6 feet 2.5 inches.

Is there a particular Olympian who inspires you?

Usain Bolt. He’s really fast and really determined. I watch documentaries on him and he always talks about how much he runs and how much he trains to get to where he is at right now.

What got you involved in track?

My mom. I was really shy and nervous but then she told me try out for track with my brother. And, as soon as I got out there, everybody was talking to me so I felt part of the team right away and I just continue to do events with everyone else.

What would you say to other people who were in your same position?

Don’t be nervous. Try to talk to people even if you’re shy about it. If you talk to somebody they will help you out and eventually you will know a lot more people. I have one friend who was really nervous when she first came to school. She really didn’t talk to anybody, so I introduced myself and we started talking right away and now she talks to everybody and everybody loves her.

#WeAreVBSchools

I want to be a medical examiner

I really do like the teachers here. They really connect with the students. And I definitely like some of the activities we do here at school. I definitely like our art teacher. She does really fun projects with us. Our nurse is really good.

And whenever we go and do our gifted classes…Mrs. Brogan, she’s really nice. And she’s really happy whenever we accomplish something big.

My teacher sometimes dresses up to teach us lessons. We used Oreos to learn the moon phases. We were using food and stuff like clementines and graham crackers for fractions. She let’s us go onto our computers a lot.

Have you thought about what you want to do when you grow up?

I want to be a medical examiner. I’ve always been interested in the medical field and I thought I was going to be a surgeon, but then I found out about a medical examiner and how it’s not limited. You explore throughout all of the body. As a surgeon, you’re only allowed to do the ankle or you’re only allowed to the elbow or the shoulder or the nose. But I learned, as a medical examiner, you go all throughout the body. You do the brain; you do the lungs; you do the stomach. You do everything to find out how this person passed away, and I just really want to help people out and find out how their loved ones died.

How did you learn about medical examiners?

I don’t remember how I learned about it. I feel like it was a TV show.

#WeAreVBSchools

Field hockey is my outlet

I play field hockey competitively on a team, TCOYO. I also played at school but I compete nationally with that club team, and I’ve also been on the junior national team for the U17 division. I’m a goal keeper and that’s my outlet for school. I just forget about everything. I play because that’s what I want to do. I’m a student-athlete. I’m going to Ohio State for college and I’ve got a scholarship to play field hockey there.

#WeAreVBSchools

I’ve made a lot of platform games

Scratch is basically like a website where you can make your own game and code it. Then you can share it and people worldwide can look at it, like it and follow you. I have three followers. I’ve made a lot of platform games. You use the arrow keys to move around; then you can jump and all that jazz.

Why are you interested in this?

When I was younger I started counting at a very young age. When I was maybe 1.5 years old, I always wanted to do addition because my cousin lived with me at my grandma’s house and she showed me: one plus one is two. And I started memorizing. By preschool I was already doing multiplication, but only the basics. Then I kept doing it and my mom asked me if I wanted to keep going with math and I said, “Yeah, this is really fun.” So we signed up for a program called Kumon. Now I’m basically at the highest level so far. My cousin is at the highest, too. She’s two grades older than me. We’re at the same exact level.

What do you hope to do in the future for a career? Will you use math?

It’s just like the complete opposite. I want to be a judge or a lawyer, but I like doing math so I don’t exactly know. But I’m trying to go for a judge because I like history and law and all that stuff because it’s really fun, too. I don’t know why I like history. It’s just fun learning about a lot of people.

First I wanted to be one of those doctors or a dentist. When I got to fourth grade I learned about more jobs in the future, and then I finally figured out a judge. On social studies tests I always get 100s, so I’m pretty confident about that.

Is there anything else you want people to know?

I like playing soccer too. I play on Rush. I have many friends that do soccer too. I also play piano. I’ve played for 3.5 years. For me, I think it’s really funny to see my fingers running around scales and it’s just enjoyable when I’m bored. Then I have to go to competitions. I’m trying out for a higher competition and if I win, I get like $300 or something.

What will you do with the money?

I don’t know yet about that. I gotta win first.

#WeAreVBSchools

I’m a nurturer by nature

This is my second year here. The counselors are all really sweet. They’ve accepted me, welcomed me, and they’re really wonderful.

I love the students, of course, especially. When the parents come in and they’re nervous and they’re unsure of what they need, I like to be able to put them at ease.

I’m caring…I’m a nurturer by nature so it’s a good environment for me. I like to have the office be a calm, inviting experience when people come in, especially if they are upset or unsure or have questions.

We heard you’re known for dressing up for school spirit days.

When I first started I asked if it would be OK if I dressed up for stuff. The students and parents like it when I do. I like it when I do it. It makes me happy to make them happy. I have a, sort of, playful personality but I’m also sort of rule-driven and policy-driven. I try to keep things organized so it’s easier to get the job done and when people need something, I know where to direct them. I’m just trying to help wherever I can.

Is there anything else you’d want people to know?

What I want people to know is it’s a lot of hard work. When I took this job I had no idea the volume of work. It’s constant. It’s year-round. We’re always here. All high school registrars especially – it’s a very, very, at times, demanding job. You have to be very detail-oriented. It’s a lot to do organization-wise, the record keeping, the records management, diplomas, the constant registrations and withdrawals, It’s just – I had no idea. I enjoy it. I learned it but I’m really not sure if the general public understands the amount of responsibility and work it includes.

People come to us for everything, whether it has to do with our jobs or not. And you know we’re a default Google search engine: Where is this? What’s that? How do you do this? The secretaries in the district play a very, very, very important role.

We love this area

I’ve worked for the school system 23 years here at Pembroke – all of them. My children came through the school system here. My grandchildren, too. I was wanting to go to work where my children were at school and I’ve been here ever since.

I have lived in the same zip code my entire life – 23455 – seriously. I went to Virginia Beach schools: Bayside Elementary, Bayside Junior High and then Independence Junior and then Princess Anne High School. My kids also went to Princess Anne.

We love this area. I’m a true native.

Did you ever consider moving?

The only place I would ever move to would be to Florida.

#WeAreVBSchools #WeAreWednesdays

I want to serve my country

My dad is in the Navy. He is a deep sea diver; he works on the ocean. One day he had to go back to this island called Guam, where we used to live, for three months. And when he came back, my sister had been practicing on her guitar and she made a song for him.

Some of the things I like to do are play catch with my dad whenever he is home and have a Nerf war with him or something. And I’m really interested in World War II. It had a lot of history and some of the things about World War II are really cool – like how we Americans got into the enemy base and claimed freedom for our country.

Have you thought about what you’d like to do when you grow up?

Probably go into the Army. I want to serve my country.

#WeAreVBSchools

Passion project

The “passion project” that I worked on last year was with my friend. We were really interested in helping the homeless so we decided to do something about it and we created a fundraiser here at Thoroughgood where people dropped off cans of nonperishable food. We actually had so much food that the food bank couldn’t take it all so we gave some to the Hood Operation. That was really cool. They said they could use our help so we gave the rest of it to them.

What inspired you to help the homeless?

They had these U.N. goals [in class] and some of them were poverty or helping the ocean. We decided that [helping the homeless] was the one that interested us the most. We did some research and then put our plan into action.

What did you like the best about the project?

I just like seeing everybody donating things and that they really cared about the homeless. I just really liked that.

#WeAreVBSchools

I design and build robots

I like technology, specifically robots because it’s like an artificial human. You can build it to do a certain thing unless you’re cutting through the three laws of robotics. You cannot make a robot hurt a human. You cannot make a robot to hurt itself. And I forgot the third one. I learned these laws from my teacher.

Have you been in any robotics competitions?

Yes, I have. I think the name was STEM Robotics Competition. Sadly, last year our robots lost all of their coding. Three of the robots didn’t work. The other robot could only go back and forth. The year before we got second place.

Do you code the robots?

I design and build the robots. Now that we have a 3D printer it will be easier because we can make certain alignments to the body and certain angles that we need.

Why do you enjoy robotics so much?

Because it gives me freedom to do what I want with things. Whatever you can imagine, you can build.

#WeAreVBSchools

I’d like to be a lawyer

I like for people to be who they are and not try to act fake. And I like beautiful cultures; I like all people around the world.

Math is my favorite subject because you get to learn and use different stuff, like calculators and protractors. You get to create stuff.

Have you thought about a career you might like?

I’d like to be a lawyer. I’ve seen “Judge Judy.” I just want to be like that – tough, creative, and to see if people are lying or not.

#WeAreVBSchools

Drawings, mosaics and sketches

Leonardo da Vinci inspired me because when I was little, I read about him. He actually did the “Mona Lisa” and I thought that that was very interesting and cool – so I started doing drawings, mosaics and sketches as my inspiration for art. He was very inspiring because first he didn’t know he wanted to be an artist. He just started painting and drawing, and then he didn’t even want to let out the “Mona Lisa.” But after he died, somebody found it and released it to a museum. I think that’s really interesting because I really don’t like to show my work, but I just like to see it. I’ve done about six art pieces this year and eight last year. I really don’t keep track. My favorite piece is a woman; she’s holding a bouquet of flowers. I like drawing people because it’s the easiest and most interesting.

#WeAreVBSchools

I just started to love running

I like to play sports. My favorites are track, football and basketball. My dad started running and so he introduced me to running. I just started to love running and all those sports have a lot of running in it, and I’m like, “Maybe I can do that because I love running.” My farthest run has been five miles.

And I like orchestra. I was thinking about going to SVU for college because there is a musical scholarship. I play the cello.

#WeAreVBSchools

Getting smarter

I want a higher IQ like Stephen Hawking.

How did you find out about Stephen Hawking?

I was just doing some research. I looked up some of the smartest people and he came up. He’s paralyzed. He had a disease but I can’t remember. And I thought, “If he can get that smart and he’s paralyzed, then maybe I can.” He is like an astrophysicist – or some kind of physicist.

Why do you think it’s good to be smart?

Well, it can help you get into places. Like, I’m trying to get into NASA. If I can’t do that, then I just want to be a zoologist.

What do you want to be at NASA? Do you want to be an astronaut?

No. It’s either going to be an engineer or one of, like, the head staff. My best thing is math. I like math a lot. Like, we are doing hands-on equations in our classroom and I’m at the highest.

Do you think that’s going to help you get into NASA?

Well, it’s helping me get smarter.

Dance is a nice outlet

I’m on a competition dance team and part of a dance studio called Twinkle Toes Performing Arts Company. I’m with their volunteer performance group and I’m also on staff there working one day a week in the office.

Why do you like dance?

I dance because it’s a nice outlet to get away from school and homework. It’s a nice break.

Do you want to become a dancer?

No. I want to go into the medical field. I want to become a medical examiner or something pathology related.

#WeAreVBSchools

My dad’s in the Navy

My dad’s in the Navy. He’s a chef. Since I’ve never been on the ship with him, he took me on his ship. It was big. I got to play on a computer. I had two plates of food and I had grape juice. My daddy’s boss took me to the store on the ship and we got to get candy bars, and I took a nap on a fluffy dark pink pillow. Then when we got back home we had to go back to the ship because my daddy had to go out to sea. It’s going to be eight months.

#WeAreVBSchools

I want to study criminal justice

The one thing I like about middle school is that there are different periods of activities we can do. Like, I was in orchestra and then I switched to AVID. It’s a college class and it prepares you for college.

Have you thought about college and a career?

Since I was little, my one thing was going into the military. But then, growing up – like, after I left fifth grade – I thought about first going to hair and nail school or the military, either or. And after I do five years in the military, going to a college in North Carolina for criminal justice. My mother did criminal justice; she went to Norfolk State and I used to go on campus with her growing up. I just want to go somewhere else and try something new.

#WeAreVBSchools

I think we’re both connectors

“I think something that Courtney and I both pride ourselves in is that we never want to forget what it’s like to be a classroom teacher, so we do everything we can to support our staff. One thing that’s awesome about being a librarian is that we get to help teachers when we collaborate with them and enhance an idea or lesson that they have. It’s just nice to see them feel successful and be successful knowing that we helped them change something up or supported them to do something they may not have tried on their own.”

“Along those lines, a new thing right that everybody’s doing is the Breakout EDUs. We know very well how much time it takes to put those things together, so we love it when we can do that for a teacher. When we can take their content, collaborate with them and put that together and they get to experience something like that, it’s really exciting because the kids are super engaged and the teacher has learned something new and then inevitably we learn something new. We get excited about new content and it’s just fun to experience that with them.”

What do you like best about your work?

“I think that we both have that growth mindset in the sense that we want to stay abreast of current trends. We like finding new technological programs and figuring out how it could work for people here at school and how can they use it with their kids. I really enjoy that aspect. When we go to conferences, sometimes sessions are labelled ‘elementary,’ ‘middle,’ ‘high school.’ Well, a lot of times I like to go to an elementary session to see how they do it and then I’m like, that can easily be used here in the secondary level. We both like learning new things and sharing and collaborating. I feel like that culture is growing among our other high school librarians. We’ve even talked about having a middle school/high school meeting so we could all share things. I think we both enjoy that part of the job.”

“I think we’re both connectors which is why this job is suitable for us, like Jen said. And we’re both nerdy, lifelong learners. We always want to learn. When there is a conference or any kind of opportunity to learn something new, we’re always the ones saying, ‘Can we go please?’ We’re the connectors. We want to bring that back to the faculty and share that with the kids, too. I think that’s what makes us work well together.”

“And we like working with the community. We have this project we do with our English 10 core kids that we’re really proud of. It’s called A Community Problem Fair. It used to be that an English 10 research project was to pick a problem and discuss solutions. So we thought: Why don’t we make this more meaningful for these kids? We asked a lot of nonprofits in the area to come in and talk about local problems, like Lynnhaven River Now to talk about the environment and Samaritan House to talk about domestic abuse. So the students do an in-house field trip. The organizations come in and discuss their problems and the kids choose which problem they want to focus on. They research that organization and our databases, and they usually do a community service part of the project. The kids last year started a Toby’s Dream group here at school, which is like a local Make-A-Wish foundation, and they raised money to help a kid fulfill a dream. I get chill bumps thinking about it because, in a way, we’re helping teach them how to give back.”

“We also find a byproduct of the problem fair is that we have kids who have personal needs that make a connection to somebody who helps them. Like Jen said, a lot of these kids they might not have people at home getting them involved in philanthropy so we do a lesson beforehand. We go into the classrooms for a short lesson and we do an empathy video and we talk about helping others. We do this ‘wouldn’t it be nice if…’ statement. We read the statements and they’re like, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if children weren’t abused.’ And it makes you think that these kids are dealing with so much. We bring these real life people in and the kids come up to us afterward and ask, ‘Can I talk to that lady because I really feel like I need to?’ A really beautiful thing that happened…we had this group that was new this year. It’s called SMILE. They raise money for kids who may not be able to afford things like prosthetic limbs or other needs. We had a…oh, I get so emotional about it. We had a student and he needed new hearing aids. He has a teacher aide who sits with him and he asked, ‘Well, could they help me?’ We connected him with SMILE and they were going to help him. And he was just one among others who had a need that was met that way.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

“I enjoy fishing with my family. I have three boys and they play baseball so I spend a lot of time at the baseball field. I just enjoy watching them play whatever sport is in season. I like to exercise. They say you are most like the five people you hang out with and my five core group of people, we like to be healthy. I like to be outside and be in nature.”

“My family is huge so I’m just a super family-oriented person. Whenever I am not here I’m doing something for family or with family, not just my immediate family but my aunts and uncles and cousins. I also like to be outdoors and be active. Once the weather changes we will be outside until the sun sets – playing, walking, running, beaching it. And of course, I like reading.”

Making the library the heart of the school

I was a part-time special education teacher at Old Donation Center, in the old building, then became full-time. I was the first full-time special education teacher there. I loved special education because it was great to be able to work with kids you felt deserved a shot, deserved to be included, and it was good to be an advocate for them. So, I really didn’t have “librarian” on my radar – at all. I was doing well at Old Donation and switched over to Kempsville Middle School, and the reason librarian came on my radar was because one of my inclusion teachers was studying to become a librarian. She told me what libraries are all about today, which is very different than what a lot of people might imagine. It just seemed to really fit with my skill set and the things that I am passionate about, and I liked that I could have my hands all over the school and sort of create this community around the library. I really wanted the library to be a place that was the heart of the school and where kids could just feel comfortable – in a lot of ways, as comfortable as they would be in their own living room. Just coming in and reading a book, discovering and exploring technology, and creating.

I think I’ve always been somewhat of a curator. I always have been passionate about finding new things – whether it’s books or movies and recommending those things to other people so they can discover and be passionate about those things, too. That fit really well with me and my personality and going into the library science field. So, I’ve come here to Windsor Woods this year and it has been an amazing place with a wonderful administration, and they’ve allowed me to kind of forge my own path when it comes to the library. It’s been a lot of fun.

You said libraries are not what people imagine, so how would you describe school libraries today?

A lot of people might have a similar impression that I did: that it was a place where you had to be quiet and you just went there to find books – which is great, books are great and that’s still a core piece of what the library is – but it just starts there and has expanded to include all different kinds of resources. And that’s one of the biggest things that libraries do, provide access to learning resources so kids who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to explore these things can explore them. It’s expanded to all forms of technology, whether it’s robots or virtual reality, or just exploring online resources, or even just playing with LEGOs – kids learn through exploration and play, so we foster that in the library. We just wanted it to be a place where kids wanted to be.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Well, I have two boys at home, ages 6 and 3, and they’re pretty much my world right now. Sharing a book with them has been one of the most special things that we do together. I do take a lot of books from the library and share them my boys, and we discover and share those things together. Outside of that, I’ve always been a movie guy. So, I’m a big nerd. I love science fiction movies and science fiction books – Star Trek, Star Wars and all that. I’m a Marvel guy, too. One of the first things I did when I got to the library was to take all of our graphic novels and put them in a section because I’ve always been a comic-book, graphic-novel guy. I wanted to promote and share that with the students here. I love to be able to watch students explore and grow, to share new things with them, to watch their passions grow and have them sort of discover who they are and what path they want to take.
