I’m really involved in this school

I’m really involved in this school. I like staying busy in school because I don’t like to just have nothing to do where I get to the point that I’m so bored that I fall asleep. I started my own club here. It’s the Minecraft club. We play the video game Minecraft but along with it we learn coding. We actually have grants from Microsoft where we have special licenses that have different technology in Minecraft that we use for programming and coding and art and design. So I love that, too. Robotics club – I do that, too. And the forensics team here, I do impromptu. I got second place in the city last year, and I’m doing that same category again this year.

Outside of school I take and teach skating lessons at Haygood Skating Center, and I play piano. I started roller skating seven years ago or when I was 7, I think. I used to take the same public lessons that I teach now. I used to take those at first and I got better. So I moved on to private one-on-one lessons with the teacher and then I help her to teach other students after I take my lessons.

Why do you like roller skating?

It keeps me active. I get to hang out with friends all the time because Haygood is so close in this area that everyone goes there. I go there every Saturday. I get there at 10:30 a.m. for my private lesson for 30 minutes and then public lessons for another 30 minutes, and then they open to the public at 12:00 p.m. and I usually stay there until 4 or 5 p.m.

What are your career aspirations?

Marine biology, graphic design, social media – stuff like that. I also volunteer at the Virginia Aquarium often, so doing that, I guess, got my attention as to how cool all the technology is and the science behind it, which is another one of my favorite subjects so that’s how it ties in. And graphic design…I run the school’s Instagram here. Doing that, I got better after a while at manipulating pictures and text.

I wonder if there is a way to combine them all.

I know. My dad was saying I could be the Virginia Aquarium social media/graphic designer.
