I had been a docent at the Met in New York for 18 years taking children’s groups around doing art. Then we moved down to Charleston and I was doing the same thing at the Gibbes Museum, and I would also go out to Title I schools and teach art history once a month. Children and education have always been my passion. And then when we came here, I just decided, alright, what’s the closest school? And, being a New Yorker, I guess, I just walked in here and said, “If you need me, I’m here. I’ll help in any way I can.”
There is an atmosphere here of everybody being very supportive of the kids and it makes people like me, who come in from the outside, want to be a part of it and help out even more. I think that’s part of the problem; there may be people out there that could give their time and they just don’t know how. I walk here Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I’m also here for the book fair and special events like field day. I just love to be around something that is dynamic like this. To give them the time, it just makes you happy because you think maybe it made that person’s day a little brighter.
