“We love a day like today,” Kemps Landing/Old Donation School principal Kelly Hedrick told the crowd. “It’s too quiet here in the summer when the students are away.”
Students and families returned to school grounds Aug. 6 for the annual community picnic. Attendees enjoyed music, outdoor games and food trucks along with an occasional flash mob dance by students in the gifted dance education program.
New students and their parents were invited to the event, and student ambassadors stationed throughout the school courtyard and in the building answered questions, offered maps and provided directions.
“The school bus will drop you off there, and then you enter through this corridor to get to your classroom,” explained one ambassador to a rising sixth-grader and his mother.
“To get to the cafeteria you go through that breezeway and turn right,” said another ambassador to a family.
Back in the courtyard, families ate lunch at picnic tables and on blankets while children played with hula hoops, jump ropes, corn hole boards and giant chess sets.
Nearby, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) offered Kemps Landing/Old Donation School spirit wear for purchase – T-shirts printed with the statements: “Create. Innovate. Illuminate.”
Tuesday, Sept. 8, the first day of the new school year, students and staff will begin to do just that.
